Just 1 Hour

The concept behind ABC...123 For Literacy is simple...very simple.

Donate 1 hour a week to teach someone to read, write, do maths, budget, write emails, fill in forms, becoming computer literate...or whatever it is that they need or want to do.  Your efforts will succeed if you offer to teach what the person is interested in learning.  Maybe they need to learn how to read instructions carefully...whatever it is...listen and then teach.

It is easy to turn aside and not give it any further thought but let's imagine what a difference 1 hour a week could make to the lives of people who cannot read or write at a functional level.

We can all find 1 hour a week...let's make that 1 hour per week the greatest investment ever made by people to each other.  We can help ourselves...we must help ourselves.

The First Steps...Take Action Now

Picture
Why wait for someone else to take action...be proactive...offer your help.
  • Leave your contact details so that we can contact you.
  • Talk with your friends...ask them to help
  • Talk to your family...ask them to help
  • Organise awareness campaigns in your own area
  • Be sensitive...it is a very sensitive issue for people
  • Be gentle
  • Offer help in a non-judgmental, gentle way
  • When you find someone to help...LISTEN.
  • Find out what they want to achieve and begin, where they would like to begin realistically...bearing in mind their age and maturity etc.,
  • Be passionate about the importance of literacy in such a way as to touch, move and inspire those around you to take action too.

Some Suggestions to get Started

1. The First action we are asking people to take is simple:  take extra time to teach children how to read...turn off the television and read with children.

2. If there is someone in your family who has difficulty reading engage them gently in a conversation and sensitively suggest that you are available to help if they would like that.

3. Join volunteer groups such as parents associations...and set up homework clubs in your own communities.

4. Go to the local volunteer groups in your own localities and register your interest in teaching someone to read.

5.  Register your interest here on this website below.
