About ABC...123

If you are reading this then you are one of the truly fortunate.

This awareness campaign has been set up by a group of volunteers with no links to the educational authorities...but who are doing it because they wish to create the possibliity of solutions within communities.

The thinking behind this concept is to ask everyone who is literate to offer 1 hour to teach someone they may know or someone in their own community who comes forward for assistance.

Offer 1 hour a week of your time to teach someone something they would like to learn…maybe reading, writing, maths, form filling, computer literacy…how to send emails…or look up information. It sounds obvious when you know how to do it…but for those who don’t know how…it can seem like a mountain to climb!

Imagine what a difference 1 hour of your time would make to the lives of people around you who struggle (often in silence) from an inability to read, write, do basic maths or basic computer skills, such as e-mail or word etc.

It doesn't have to cost any money, use the books and I.T equipment you have available, or go to your nearest volunteer organisation and offer your time.

The Facts

Remember literacy is about much more than learning the basics, it also involves listening skills, verbal skills and vocabulary, reading, writing, numeracy and using everyday technology to communicate and handle information.  It affects people of all ages and all classes…

It is estimated by the National Literacy Trust that over 25% of Irish people are affected by illiteracy.  Are you shocked?  Yes...then take action and do something to help...offer 1 hour per week to teach someone you know to read, write, do maths or basic computer skills.  It's really that simple.

Imagine the predictable future if no one tries to create new possibilities or to create hope in a new way of being, a new society...one that shares and works towards a better future for all of us.

It is as it is...but it doesn't have to remain this way if we all work together. We are setting out to create the possibility that people will become touched, moved and inspired to take action.

We all know people, from small children to adults who have difficulties reading and writing...and we are creating the possibility of reaching out and making a difference.
